The History
Hip Hop was born at a back-to-school party on 11 August 1973, in the recreation room of 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx. DJ Kool Herc played the drum breaks of records back to back on two turntables, stretching the part dancers loved most — and the dancers who moved to those breaks became known as B-boys and B-girls.
It was never just a dance step. Afrika Bambaataa and the Zulu Nation described Hip Hop as a culture built on five elements: DJing, MCing, Breaking, Graffiti and Knowledge. From those Bronx parties it travelled through New York, then the world, and became the foundation of almost every urban dance style that followed.
At MOBS, Hip Hop means the bounce and the groove first — the feeling of the music in your body — and then the technique built on top of it, from old-school foundations to modern commercial energy.
The MOBS Way
We focus on the "Bounce" and the "Groove". Our approach combines traditional old-school foundations with modern commercial energy.
